St. Agnes Healthcare in the News
In August 2017, St. Agnes Healthcare paid nearly $123,000 to the U.S. government to settle a lawsuit alleging that it knowingly engaged in Medicare overbilling, a violation of the False Claims Act. According to the settlement agreement, 12 cardiologists practicing at St. Agnes affiliated Maryland Cardiovascular Specialists submitted excessive Medicare reimbursement requests from 2011 to 2014. The reimbursement requests were reportedly inaccurate because they were coded at a higher new patient rate when the doctors were actually treating existing patients.
In announcing the settlement, the U.S. attorney’s office maintained that the accusations in the suit were “allegations only” and that it had not determined any liability. The lawsuit was filed by a whistleblowing cardiologist formerly employed by St. Agnes Healthcare. He reportedly received a $20,000 apportionment from the settlement.
History of St. Agnes Healthcare
St. Agnes Hospital is the cornerstone of St. Agnes Healthcare, a medical network in the Baltimore area that includes primary, specialty, and pediatric physician offices. Founded in 1823 by a group of Catholic women known as the Daughters of Charity, the hospital was originally called the Baltimore Infirmary and primarily treated the city’s indigent population. When a donor provided an expanded location for the facility in 1862, he requested that the new campus be named after his wife Agnes. The location’s name was changed to St. Agnes Hospital, and it continued to grow along with the Baltimore community, moving again in 1876 to its current location on Caton Avenue in the heart of the city. Along with its reputation as a premier teaching network, St. Agnes Healthcare is known for revolutionizing the field of early heart attack care with the addition of a chest pain center to its hospital emergency department in 1981. The concept was soon adopted by acute care facilities worldwide.
St. Agnes Healthcare is part of Ascension, a Catholic faith-based non-profit healthcare organization that is one of the largest private medical systems in the country.
