History of Frederick Memorial Hospital

The facility opened in 1902 after Emma Smith, a lifelong resident of Frederick, MD, raised $8,000 to build a hospital in her hometown. Five years later, the size of the campus had doubled, and today Frederick Memorial Hospital remains the only acute care institution in Frederick County. The hospital is a private, non-profit establishment and one of the top employers in the region with over 2,700 workers.

In October 2019, Frederick Memorial Hospital changed its name to Frederick Health Hospital as part of a rebranding initiative. The umbrella organization that operates the hospital, Frederick Regional Health System, also changed its name to Frederick Health. Several other facilities are part of the Frederick Health network, including Frederick Health Hospice, Frederick Health Employer Solutions, and Frederick Health Home Care.

In March 2019, Frederick Regional Health System (now known as Frederick Health), which operates Frederick Memorial Hospital, issued a press release stating that hundreds of its patients had protected health information (PHI) exposed due to an electronic data breach. According to the press release, a Frederick Health system employee was the victim of a phishing attack whereby an unauthorized user gained entry to their email files. As a result, the illicit user had access to highly confidential patient records containing their names, social security numbers, and health information.

While Frederick Health officials indicated there was no evidence of PHI misuse, they offered a free year of credit monitoring to eligible patients as a precaution. Affected patients were also advised to “review statements they receive from their health insurers” for accuracy.
