History of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital

Founded in 1979 by members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is a 266-bed facility in Rockville serving metro Washington, D.C., and surrounding Maryland counties. With a focus on providing healthcare for underserved members of the community, the hospital is well known for its high-risk birthing unit, pediatric emergency department, and cardiac and vascular services. In 2019, the Forensic Medical Unit at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital was recognized by the Montgomery County Council for contributions to the community through its work in assisting sexual assault survivors and victims of human trafficking.

As Shady Grove Adventist Hospital continued to grow through the decades, it expanded its reach in the metro D.C. area by opening several satellite facilities, including a cancer treatment center and a Germantown location catering to limited-income patients. In 2014 it joined the Adventist Health Care system, a health systems network in Western Maryland with over 60 facilities, and rebranded as Adventist Healthcare Shady Grove Medical Center.
